Comcast has launched its new Docsis 3.1 gateway nationwide. The xFi Advanced Gateway supports gigabit speeds over Wi-Fi and is available in markets where the cable operator offers Xfinity Gigabit Internet.

Comcast said the gateway achieved Wi-Fi speeds faster than 1.5 Gbps in lab tests. The device includes a 160 MHz-capable 8x8 antenna array, Mu-MiMo (Multi-user, Multi-input, Multi-output) and a combination of specialized Internet of Things radios. The latter includes Bluetooth LE, Zigbee and Thread to connect the growing range of smart home devices on the market.

The gateway comes with the company's xFi system for set-up, where users scan a QR code with the operator's app to launch the set-up process and manage the device. The device can be used for customers subscribing to broadband at 300 Mbps or higher, while the gigabit broadband service is available in 26 markets and expanding. Later this month, Comcast also will introduce a Wi-Fi mesh option to expand in-home coverage.
