Competition Authority to advise on social internet tariff

On the behest of the French ministry of the economy, the country's Competiton Authority said it would study and give its opinion on the implications of a planned social tariff for internet services. Unlike the universal service mechanism, the internet social tariff does not entail government compensation to operators offering the discount rate for unemployed people and those on benefits. The antitrust regulator said this raises questions about the functioning of markets concerned, especially in the broadband access sector in light of the particular situation of incumbent operator France
