ComReg proposes new 088 number range for M2M services

Irish telecoms regulator ComReg is consulting on a review of mobile numbering as it looks to promote innovation and support new services. The consultation outlines various proposals for a long-term numbering scheme for mobile numbers, and closes on 07 March.

These mobile numbering proposals include opening a new (088) number range for M2M services to avoid exhausting existing mobile number ranges and impacting on mobile customers; allowing the extraterritorial use of these M2M numbers; and allowing numbers from this M2M range to be used for the 112-based eCall in-vehicle emergency calling system. ComReg is also proposing to allow authorised OTT service providers to have access to a Mobile Operator's Network and to be assigned numbers from existing ranges (083, 085, 086, 087 and 089).
