Costa Rica blocks mobile signal in jails

Costa Rica has announced an amendment to its telecommunications act to prevent prisoners from accessing a mobile signal within jails. Under the terms of the amended article 49 of the act, signed into law by president Carlos Alvarado, operators have been given 9 months to block mobile services within prison walls, at all times ensuring there is no impact on the service of users in the surrounding areas. All correctional facilities are covered by the new regulation, which was drafted by 3 ministries including ICT ministry Micitt.
