Court case makes FBI lift lid on private data requests

The FBI issues several thousand national security letters (NSL) a year, and at one point over 50,000 annually, a measure available since the 1970s but whose use exploded after the Patriot Act of 2001, Reuter reports, citing a public filing in a case between Calyx Internet Access founder Nicholas Merrill against the FBI.
