De Maiziere wants independent body to rule on web deletions

German Home Affairs Minister Thomas de Maiziere opposes the idea of letting search engines such as Google and Yahoo decide for themselves which personal data to delete from the internet at users' request, Reuters reported. This would only cement their power, according to the text of a speech he was due to give on data security on 23 June. At the same time, he said, the decision should not be entirely down to an authority: instead, an independent arbitrator should be established for cases when the right to privacy clashed with the interests of freedeom of expression, the media and information
