Deutsche Telekom partners with Munster utility to bring fibre to 160,000 households

Thursday 30 July 2020 | 10:34 CET | News

Deutsche Telekom said it has signed a partnership agreement with the utility company in Munster to expand the fibre network. Details of the cooperation are still the subject of further discussions between the parties. By 2030, FTTH internet connections should be available for 160,000 households in Munster in around 40,000 buildings.

The cooperation focuses initially on establishing joint operations to start building a a gigabit-capable infrastructure based on fibre- optic technology. The municipal utility already operates a fibre-optic network in two districts in Munster. The company will begin this year to connect the district of Amelsburen, with support from the federal broadband funding program.

Municipal utilities are responsible for the construction of passive technology as part of the cooperation. Telekom operates the active network components. The companies are independent providers of fibre-optic contracts. Third-party network access is guaranteed on a non-discriminatory basis and on fair commercial terms. A prerequisite to expand the roll-out is demand from customers, which is queried as part of pre-marketing. The partners want to connect the first new areas to the network under the partnership in Q2 2021.
