Dominican Republic ups tax on imported phones to 8%

Tuesday 12 February 2019 | 10:34 CET | News
The Dominican Republic’s customs authority (DGA) has decided to increase the tax imposed on imported cellular equipment including smartphones from 3 percent to 8 percent, reports Telesemana, citing DGA communications manager Lisette Selman. The initial intention was to hike the tariff to 20 percent but the 8 percent figure was finally agreed upon after taking into account the “usefulness and service provided by these devices”, said the official, adding that the decision would not affect the end user.

However, the country’s operators including Altice Dominicana and Claro (America Movil) said the higher tariff would inevitably restrict the possibility of acquiring devices, describing the move as counterproductive and a boost to harmful practices such as smuggling. "We are the second country in the region and the sixth in the world with the highest tax burden, according to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU)”, said the companies in a joint statement.
