DRC committee uncovers misuse of fibre network funding

A Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) parliamentary mission has found that millions of dollars were misused in the first phase of a project to build a national fibre-optic network. State-owned company Societe Congolaise des Postes et Telecommunications (SCPT) and China International Telecommunication Construction Corporation (CITCC) began building the backbone network in 2012. It was financed in part by China's Exim Bank, Reuters reported. The backbone links Congo to the West Africa Cable System (WACS), a submarine cable system in the Atlantic Ocean.
