DRC reopens SMS communications

The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has lifted a ban on SMS communications, imposed to help maintain public order in the wake of a disputed legislative election at the end of November. RFI reports that the government is still keeping strict powers of control over phone networks, a policy denounced by journalists and others. Operators must keep accurate records of their customers and inform authorities of any message related to state security. There are essentially no fixed phone services in the DRC, which makes mobiles so crucial and voice calls are expensive for the average
