Dutch mobile service revenues fall 2.5% in Q1, KPN loses market share

Thursday 13 June 2019 | 11:10 CET | News

Dutch mobile service revenues fell 2.5 percent year-on-year in the first quarter to EUR 918 million. Market leader KPN was the only one to lose market share, while the new combination of T-Mobile and Tele2 finished just behind Vodafone in third place in terms of revenues, according to the latest edition of Telecompaper's Dutch Mobile Operators quarterly report

Mobile revenues continued lower due to price pressure and regulatory effects, as well as the impact of the merger of T-Mobile and Tele2. T-Mobile lost wholesale revenues as a result of the takeover, as Tele2 previously relied on roaming with T-Mobile.

KPN loses most

KPN posted the biggest fall in revenues, down 3.4 percent, due especially to pressure in the business market and also a small drop in consumer. The company finished the quarter with a 40.1 percent share of service revenues. Vodafone posted the smallest drop, down 1.3 percent year-on-year, resulting in a small increase in market share of 0.3 percent points to 31.1 percent.

T-Mobile completed its takeover of Tele2 in January. The combined group posted pro forma service revenues down 2.4 percent, due to the loss of wholesale income. Their collective market share reached 28.8 percent in Q1, still in third place.

Small increase in Sims

The number of mobile customers on the Dutch market showed a small annual increase of 1.1 percent in Q1, to 20.6 million at the end of March (excluding M2M). Mobile penetration increased to 119.1 percent.

Telecompaper expects revenues to continue to fall on the Dutch mobile market. Its new forecast is for a 2-3 percent fall in 2019 to EUR 3.8 billion in service revenue. Over the five years to 2023, the market is expected to show a negative CAGR of 1.6 percent, as the regulatory impact lessens, while consumers continue to migrate to bigger data bundles. Competition and price pressure are unlikely to relent in the period.
