EC clears Bavarian fibre broadband development plan

The European Commission has approved the Bavarian state government's broadband expansion plans, dslweb.de reported, and the project's budget will now be topped up from EUR 1.0 billion to EUR 1.50 billion. The plan is that every borough will have a fast fibre-optic connection by 2018. The Bavarian cabinet approved the scheme in January 2014 but it has been waiting for the EU to give the green light. It required careful consideration as it involved simplifying the approval process. Its compliance with prevailing competition law had to be analysed closely.
