EC looks to simplify VAT to boost cross-border e-commerce

The European Commission has confirmed measures aimed at easing VAT administration for cross-border online sellers in the EU as well as harmonising VAT on digital and physical books and magazines. Under the current system, online traders must register for VAT payments in each country to which they sell products. The Commission proposes setting up a 'one-stop shop' where traders can make their VAT filings for all EU states. Not only will this help reduce business administration costs, it is expected to help member states increase their VAT receipts.
