EC praises Telefonica's SmartSantander project

The European Commission has issued a report praising the three-year SmartSantander project, led by Telefonica R+D and the University of Cantabria with the support of Santander city council. According to the EC, the project "has successfully achieved all its objectives, even exceeding initial expectations." The EUR 8.67 million project, launched in 2011, sought to convert Santander into the first comprehensive smart city in Europe and an international benchmark in smart city design. Over the course of three years, some 20,000 devices such as sensors, repeaters, gateways and information screens
