Econet Zimbabwe seeks reduction in smartphone customs duties

Econet is pushing for a review of duties payable on imports of smartphones to boost adoption and internet usage, ITWeb reported. Zimbabwean internet penetration has risen to over 50 percent, and according to the Posts and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz), WhatsApp and Facebook bundles account for nearly half of all internet usage. Econet says that the local penetration rate for smartphones is lower than in in regional counterparts like South Africa.
