El Salvador agrees to block Wi-Fi networks near prisons

Monday 12 September 2016 | 13:50 CET | News
El Salvador's parliament has approved the proposal to block criminals from accessing Wi-Fi networks from within prison walls, reports local daily La Pagina. The bill was submitted last month by the country's vice president, Oscar Ortiz, to ensure Wi-Fi networks aren't deployed within a 100-meter space around the country's prisons after reports emerged of prisoners skirting government bans on phone calls by using the WhatsApp messaging service to coordinate criminal activities. Operators will be fined and their equipment dismantled if the measure is infringed, said the report.
