Facebook ends trial of emergency internet using drones

Facebook has shuttered plans to provide moble internet in emergency situations using drones, the Verge reported. The Tether-tenna project wanted to use a small helicopter drone to temporarily replace internet services during an emergency but it was stopped a few months after getting shown off at the F8 developer conference in May last year. The idea was that the helicopter would tether to fiber and power lines in places where infrastructure was damaged, fly skyward, and broadcast a signal from hundreds of feet up in the air.
