Facebook estimates 0.1% of content viewed on social network is hate speech

Friday 20 November 2020 | 11:17 CET | News

About 0.1 percent of content viewed on Facebook is hate speech, according to a new estimate by the company. Based on reviewed samples of content on the social network during the third quarter, the company estimated the percentage of times people see content that violates its hate speech policies. This equates to around 10-11 incidences of hate speech for every 10,000 pieces of content viewed on Facebook.

Facebook said it focuses on the prevalence of hate speech viewing, as some content may go viral and been seen by many more people, while other items may be viewed only a handful of times. The company defines hate speech as anything that directly attacks people based on protected characteristics, including race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender, gender identity or serious disability or disease. Its experts review samples of hate speech for local language and cultural characteristics.

The new figures are part of the company's latest report on enforcing its community standards.
