Facebook not to link accounts to phone numbers in Pakistan

Monday 17 July 2017 | 14:50 CET | News

Facebook has refused Pakistan’s request to link new Facebook accounts with phone numbers, citing issues related to users’ rights, writes Daily Pakistan reports. Pakistan made this request when Facebook VP Joel Kaplan met with Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan last week. The purpose of the request was to reduce the usage of fake profiles to post blasphemous content and enable authorities to trace users, Voice of America (VOA) reports.

Facebook has confirmed that it has decided to not comply with the request, in an attempt to continue protecting its customers’ rights. The policy for creating new accounts would remain unchanged, Facebook said.

Mobile numbers are currently verified through a biometric verification system in Pakistan. Facebook accounts are opened through a valid email address. Authorities believe the issue of fake accounts could be solved if all existing accounts are verified with phone numbers.

A Facebook official said the VP discussed Facebook’s concerns regarding recent court decisions and clarified that the company follows a strictly legal process against the government’s request for ban on any type of material.
