Facebook study finds over half of world connected to internet for first time

The internet reached more than half of the world's population last year, a watershed moment, according to the fourth edition of Facebook's internet benchmark report, performed by the Economist Intelligence Unit. A total of 4.1 billion were connected to the internet last year, leaving 3.5 billion still unconnected, mainly in low-income countries. On average, only 9.9 percent of households in low-income countries had access to the internet last year, against 88.5 percent in rich countries. Internet access growth in low-income countries continued slow, at 3.8 percent year-on-year.
