FCC chairman proposes increase in school broadband funding

FCC chairman Tom Wheeler has proposed a USD 1.5 billion increase in funding for broadband in public schools and libraries. The money would come from an increase in the E-rate tax, a levy on consumer phones bills as part of the universal service programme in the US. E-rate was reformed already earlier this year to shift funding away from legacy services and towards increased broadband support, as well as improve efficiency in allocating the funds.
