FCC opens up more of 5GHz band to unlicensed devices

The US Federal Communications Commission announced plans to open up more of the 5GHz band to unlicensed devices, supporting the expansion of new Wi-Fi technology that can offer faster speeds of 1Gbps or more. The FCC said the move should also increase overall capacity and reduce congestion at Wi-Fi hotspots. The Commission proposed to make up to 195 MHz of additional spectrum in the 5 GHz band (a 35% increase) available to unlicensed wireless devices.
