FCC proposes USD 100 mln for new telemedicine programme

Thursday 11 July 2019 | 13:56 CET | News
The Federal Communications Commission has unanimously voted to proceed with plans for a USD 100 million pilot programme to promote tele-health services. Inder the terms of the 3-year Connected Care Pilot, the FCC would provide an 85 percent discount on connectivity for broadband-enabled telemedicine services that connect patients directly to their doctors and are used to treat a wide range of health conditions.

The services would facilitate the effective treatment of chronic conditions outside of the doctor’s office at significant savings for patients and health care providers, said the commission. It also clarified that the programme would focus above all on low-income patients, veterans and areas lacking adequate health care.

"The future of healthcare is connected care, and this is the future that I want the FCC to support," said FCC chairman Ajit Pai in a statement, describing the budget allocated to the Connected Care Pilot program as “a smart investment for us and for the country."
