FCC raises broadband definition to 25 Mbps

The FCC has raised its definition of broadband to 25 Mbps for downloads and 3 Mbps for uploads. The previous standard of 4/1 Mbps was set in 2010. The change comes as part of the FCC's latest report on the progress of broadband roll-out in the US. Using the updated benchmark, the 2015 report finds that 55 million Americans – 17 percent of the population – lack access to broadband. Moreover, a significant digital divide remains between urban and rural America: Over half (53%) of all rural Americans lack access to 25 Mbps/3 Mbps service.
