FCC toughens stance against toll free texts, wants comments on intercarrier payments for toll free calling

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken a tougher stance against the fraudulent use of toll free numbers in text messaging. The Commission noted that while toll free texting has become a valuable tool for both businesses and consumers, there was a lack of clarity around who could authorise the practice, leading to fraudulent behaviour. For example, a toll free number on the back of a credit card could be text-enabled by a third party without the knowledge of the bank; fraudulent texts could then be sent to a consumer asking for sensitive account information.
