The FDP parliamentary group has had a motion passed, asking the Federal Council to position Switzerland as an international platform for internet governance, as well as presenting a number of measures to secure Geneva a strategic position as regards global governance. According to the FDP, for a digital society and economy, it is crucial that the internet remains secure and accessible. It said the internet will be a key issue in international relations and competition in the 21st century.

In order to be more proactive and to gain more influence on the international stage, the party suggests various approaches. First, the support of the 'Geneva Internet Platform' project to strengthen collaboration in the area of global governance. Second, enabling the establishment of a 'Geneva Internet Dialogue Lab', which would offer access to the latest technologies and facilitate e-collaboration between science, private industry, civil society and think tanks. Third, the formulation of coordinated and coherent foreign policy in the cybersector and fourth, the launch of a national research programme regarding different aspects of internet governance.
