Italian aerospace and defence company Finmeccanica - Selex ES has inaugurated a new Cyber Security Centre of Excellence in Chieti in the central Abruzzo region. The Chieti centre comprises the company’s Security Operation Centre (SOC) and Open Source Intelligence Centre (OSIC) where its 400 TFlops Supercalculator high performance computer is housed. The Supercalculator is ranked 30th in the Top 500 list of the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world and is second in the Green 500 league, which evaluates supercomputing infrastructures in terms of their energy efficiency rate. The company said that its Cyber Security Centre, unveiled in the presence of Italy’s interior minister Angelino Alfano, not only meets Europe's cyber security needs but also supports the development of Italy’s digital agenda. The centre provides unparalleled situational awareness by identifying malicious cyber activity, dynamically analysing it, correlating it with other events and evaluating the associated risk.

Finmeccanica - Selex ES has extensive experience in providing cyber security for the defence industry and for the civilian market with customers including governments and large industrial and service sector companies. In February 2012 it signed a development, implementation, and support contract for the NATO Computer Incident Response Capability - Full Operating Capability (NCIRC-FOC) to ensure the safety of information at around 50 NATO sites and facilities in 28 countries around the world.
