First rural fibre homes to be connected in 2016 - minister

Monday 16 February 2015 | 10:23 CET | News
The first Irish residents in areas deprived of broadband will receive broadband services over fibre in 2016, and the last rural recipients will by 2020, Ireland's communications minister, Alex White, told Silicon Republic. Some 32 percent of the population is affected by the National Broadband Plan, with the remaining 68 percent to be passed by commercially deployed networks. The plan, which will bring 30 Mbps fibre to 600,000 homes and 100,000 businesses, could cost EUR 516 million, but the final figure has not been confirmed and partly depends on the European Investment Bank.
