Fraunhofer ISS tests 5G radio signal over GEO satellite

Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS said it has tested a 5G radio signal transmission over a geostationary (GEO) satellite in partnership with the Center for Space Communications of the Bundeswehr University Munich. Fraunhofer IIS provided a 5G New Radio protocol stack for satellite for the test, which was conducted by connecting a software-based 5G base station (gNB) through a random access procedure for 5G over satellite. After setting up the connection, the 5G uplink and downlink transmission signals were decoded with two different modulation schemes, the QPSK and the 16-QAM.
