French minister seeks internet tax in 2014 budget

French digital economy minister Fleur Pellerin said in a radio interview that she hopes to include an internet tax in the 2014 budget, due to be presented to parliament in September, Les Echos reports. To do so will require deep reflection and a reforging of traditional fiscal concepts which are not at all adapted to the digital economy, she said. A report on the subject submitted to the ministry in January called for a tax on data, "which big internet companies leverage to achieve economies of scale and high profitability".
