French operators debate changing fibre rollout rules

Video will represent 66 percent of the data traffic on fixed networks by 2015, stated France Telecom-Orange chairman and CEO Stephane Richard in a speech at a conference hosted by telecommunications regulator Arcep. Les Echos reports that he also revealed that the volume of data exchanged over mobile phones is rising by 5 percent a week in Paris. These figures are meant to support his argument that the construction of a "New Internet" was required to meet a usage explosion. He called for a strengthening of the European telecom sector, which often lags behind the US and its global companies.
