French spectrum agency uses 5G simulation model to estimate RF exposure

France's spectrum agency ANFR has published a study simulating radio frequency (RF) exposure from LTE and 5G mobile antennas within a very densely populated area. The analysis considers four different scenarios, including one replicating the current situation in the geographical area chosen for the study (Paris, XIV arrondissement). The research found that the strength of the exposure, measured in volts per metre (V/m), would increase under the scenarios simulating the use of 5G frequencies, while remaining well below the limits set by current regulation, which are between 36 and 61 V/m.

In the theoretical scenario where all available LTE and 5G frequencies were exploited to the full, the simulation gave average levels ranging from 1.3 to 2.3 V/m, estimating indoor and outdoor exposure respectively. In the scenario reflecting the current situation in the same area, the comparable average values were 0.6 V/m indoors and 1.1 V/m outdoors.

The spectrum agency said that this type of study will be replicated in the future, noting that the deployment strategies of 5G operators will be fed into the simulation model to produce more refined data.
