Gabon regulator to raid markets for illicit phones

Wednesday 30 April 2014 | 11:46 CET | News
Gabon's telecom regulator, the Arcep, has announced that it will launch a 'clean-up' campaign against the sale of mobile phones that do not bear its approval label, Agence Ecofin reports. Often counterfeits, these handsets sell for between XAF 9,500 and XAF 15,000 (approximately USD 20-31), provide poor service and health risks, according to the regulator. Arcep chairman Lin Bombo said that surprise visits will begin in the main shopping areas and markets of Libreville before taking place in other cities. All illicit phones will be confiscated and destroyed.
