GCI to upgrade 28 Alaskan rural communities to 3G this year

Alaskan telecom operator General Communication (GCI) announced an upgrade to its networks in rural Alaska. These upgrades will support increasing demand for fixed broadband service and substantially improve mobile wireless service in numerous rural communities. The company will be increasing the capacity of its terrestrial broadband network, Terra, from Levelock to Bethel by deploying new radio technology. Upgrade work is due to be completed by 19 June. GCI is also deploying 3G mobile data services in 28 rural communities this year, including Alakanuk, Aniak, Chefornak, Chevak and Eek. The 3G
