German association expects 5-year delay until 2030 to complete nationwide fibre network

Monday 2 December 2019 | 09:37 CET | News

German industry group VATM expects the government to reach the goal of a nationwide fibre network by 2030 instead of 2025, RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND) reports.

According to the president of the association, Jurgen Grutzner, expansion of the network will be achieved through state financial support to residents, in particular in remote regions. For example, Grutzner supports the idea of giving state vouchers to households.

The state could provide EUR 500 to households towards connecting fibre to the building and signing a contract, and EUR 150 towards cabling within a property. This programme would cost the state about EUR 5 billion.

To supply households in remote areas, Grutzner suggests a "satellite voucher". Households would receive EUR 500 to buy a satellite dish, which currently allows a transmission of 30 Mbps service. Grutzner has called on the new EU Commission to act. So far, financial support from the state in rural areas is only permissible for a maximum bandwidth of 100 Mbps.
