German cabinet adopts broadband funding scheme

The German Cabinet adopted the funding regulation for the broadband expansion proposed by transport minister Alexander Dobrindt. The first step of the programme is to create high-speed broadband networks with speeds of 50 Mbps in under-supplied areas. The funding is targeted at municipal and district governments to help complement investment by telecoms providers. Municipalities will also be able to construct passive infrastructures such as fibre backbones and lease the infrastructure to network providers. The subsidy is usually 50 percent of the eligible costs; the maximum amount per project
