German Cartel Office launches investigation into smart TV data practices

Germany's Federal Cartel Office said it has launched a sector inquiry into smart TVs to investigate how producers of smart TVs handle user data. The Federal Cartel Office said there is "reason to believe" that smart TVs — which contain an internet connection to transmit user data as well as receive programming — transmit personal data without adequately informing the user of the data transfer or allowing them the opportunity to reject to the transfer. The Cartel Office will closely scrutinize the terms of contract used by manufacturers as part of its inquiry.
