German govt looks to promote gigabit fibre networks

Germany's Federal Minister for the Economy, Sigmar Gabriel, has presented the government's new 'Digital Strategy 2025' at CeBIT. He said the government wanted to make Germany the most modern industrial nation. The paper outlines measures to implements targets in various fields, such as infrastructure roll-out, investment and innovation support, and intelligent networking. The government plans to establish a EUR 10 billion fund to support investment in faster broadband connections in rural areas by 2025, with the aim of rolling out a gigabit (1 Gbps) fibre-optic network nationwide.
