The German Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector is expected to grow by 1.5 percent this year in terms of revenues to EUR 172.2 billion, according to a study by digital association Bitkom.

Information technology will continue to drive growth for the entire industry. Sales in the segment will increase by 2.7 percent to EUR 95.4 billion in 2020. In the software segment, revenues are expected to grow by 6.4 percent to EUR 27.6 billion. The market for IT services, including project business and IT consulting, will progress at a rate of 2.4 percent to EUR 41.9 billion. Sales in the IT hardware segment are expected to decline, instead, by 0.4 percent to EUR 25.9 billion.

In telecommunications, revenues are expected to continue growing in 2020 by 0.9 percent to EUR 68.8 billion. Telecommunications services will generate EUR 48.8 billion, which equals a moderate increase of 0.4 percent. Sales of devices will rise by 2.5 percent to EUR 12.8 billion and investments in infrastructures by 2 percent to EUR 7.2 billion.

Sales of consumer electronics will continue to decline for the third year in a row, according to Bitkom. The ITC submarket is expected to shrink this year by 7 percent to EUR 8 billion. Companies are expected to create 39,000 additional jobs in 2020. For the first time, the sector will employ more than 1.2 million people. In 2019, the ICT sector added 42,000 jobs. It exceeded expectations in terms of sales, with a 2 percent rise to EUR 169.6 billion.
