German online retailer fined EUR 10.4 mln for illegal video surveillance

The Commissioner for Data Protection (LfD) in the German state of Lower Saxony has imposed a fine of EUR 10.4 million on the online retailer notebooksbilliger.de for violating the EU General Data Protection Regulation. The LfD accused the company of video-monitoring its employees for at least two years illegally. The cameras recorded workplaces, sales rooms, warehouses and common areas, among other spaces. The company claimed that video cameras were installed to prevent and investigate criminal offenses and to track the flow of goods in the warehouses.
