Germans prefer to use mobile phones rather than fixed network

Thursday 16 May 2019 | 10:32 CET | News

The German Federal Network Agency counted around 119 billion minutes in outgoing calls on mobile phones, compared with 107 billion on the fixed network in 2018, Der Spiegel reports, citing an annual report by the authority revealed by news agency DPA.

Four years ago, Germans made 150 billion minutes of voice calls on the fixed network. On average, only five texts per month were sent per SIM card in 2018. Overall, 8.9 billion texts were typed last year, nearly 14 percent less than in 2017, the report added.

Without the cost of roaming in the EU, Germans on holiday used 66.4 million gigabyte of data on mobile phones last year, almost twice as much as in 2017. Phone calls from other EU countries went up 14 percent to about 2.9 billion minutes, according to the report from the Federal Network Agency. Roaming charges expired on 15 June 2017.

At the end of 2018, the number of chip cards in Germany was 137 million, 2 million more than one year earlier. Many of these cards are not used on a regular basis. At the end of last year, 23.1 million SIM cards were used for M2M data communication, 5.5 million more than a year earlier, the report added.
