Germany opens applications for local broadband funding

German transport minister Alexander Dobrindt has given the go ahead for the EUR 2.7 billion federal funding programme for the broadband expansion; municipalities and districts can now apply for funding for the expansion projects. This programme aims at providing under-supplied areas with internet connections of at least 50 Mbps. The programme is technology neutral, which means that the funds can go towards mobile networks in undersupplied regions as well. The funding rate is expected to be generally 50 percent of the costs; the maximum amount per project is EUR 15 million. The programme can
