Ghanaian telecoms regulator and operators face lawsuit over SIM card registration

Thursday 16 May 2019 | 09:16 CET | News

The Consumer Advocacy Centre (CAC) of Ghana has sued the National Communications Authority (NCA) and telecoms companies, asking the High Court, to protect consumers by upholding the law on SIM card registration and regulation.

CAC said consumers in Ghana are losing millions of Cedis to criminals who have invaded the telephony market by fraudulently acquiring SIM cards. These are then activated by network providers, enabling the criminals to contact and dupe unsuspecting consumers. The lives of others, CAC said, are being threatened on a daily basis by criminals with such illegally registered SIM cards, without a trace to these criminals.

CAC is seeking an order directed at the defendants to form a taskforce to include the plaintiff to undertake an audit to identify all SIM cards that have not been registered, in line with the law.
