Global device shipments slip, despite more mobile phones

Global shipments of PCs, tablets and smartphones are expected to return to growth in 2018 after a decline in 2017, pulled down by traditional PCs and basic and utility ultramobiles, according to the latest data from Gartner. Total device shipments will fall by 0.3 percent this year to 2.326 billion units, from 2.332 billion in 2016, before moving up 1.6 percent next year to 2.362 billion and again up to 2.363 billion in 2019. Mobile phone shipments will not suffer the same fate this year, with shipments advancing to 1.904 billion in 2017 year from 1.983 billion year-on-year, and then lifting
