Global PC shipments fall 6.4% in fourth quarter

Worldwide shipments of desktop PCs, notebooks and netbooks saw their first fourth quarter decline in five years in 2012, according to IDC. Worldwide shipments stood at 89.9 million, according to preliminary estimates, down 6.4 percent on the fourth quarter of 2011. IDC had expected sales to be down by 4.4 percent. The release of Windows 8 did not have an immediate impact on sluggish PC demand, overtaken by competing devices. The top vendor was HP with shipments down 0.6 percent to 15.02 million in the fourth quarter, ahead of Lenovo down 8.2 percent to 14.11 million, Dell down 20.8 percent to
