GlobalFoundries buys IBM semiconductor ops

GlobalFoundries said it has signed an agreement to acquire IBM's semiconductor technology operations, including intellectual property, staff and technologies. The deal is subject to the usual regulatory conditions. IBM will reflect a pre-tax charge of USD 4.7 billion in its financial results for the third quarter, which includes an asset impairment, estimated costs to sell the IBM microelectronics business, and cash consideration to GlobalFoundries.
