Google chief foresees deal with French govt by year-end

After meeting French president Francois Hollande, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt is sanguine about finding a deal by the end of the year with newspapers seeking payment for their articles being referenced by Google. Schmidt told the New York Times that he was "confident that some kind of agreement" would be reached. French, German, Italian and Brazilian newspapers seek compensation for so-called anciliary copyright over their articles when Google gives users the headline and first few lines of their news articles. Google has always asserted this constitutes fair use. Schmidt said
