Google has announced the release of an open source project for its Google Cardboard virtual reality (VR) viewer around 5 years after the unit was launched as a freebie at Google I/O. The company has shipped 15 million units of the simple cardboard viewer and said it now wants to allow developers to build additional experiences and add support to their Cardboard-supported apps for the increasingly diverse range of smartphone screen resolutions and configurations.
