Google testing new 'Shoelace' social networking app in NY

Friday 12 July 2019 | 14:12 CET | News

Google’s experimental products incubator Area 120 has begun testing a new social networking app called Shoelace that's designed to help people find things to do and others who share the same interests at a local level. “One of the many projects that we’re working on within Area 120 is Shoelace, an app that helps people meet others with similar interests in person through curated activities,” a Google spokesperson told website TechCrunch. “Like other projects within Area 120, it’s an early experiment, so there aren’t many details to share right now,” they said.

The app allows users to browse through a set of hand-picked activities, or add their own to a map. “Each day, we find the best things happening around you – from pick-up soccer to free comedy shows – so you don’t have to,” says the Shoelace website, encouraging users to join events and invite others to come along.

It’s currently in invite-only testing mode and only available in New York City, but the long-term goal is to bring it to US cities nationwide, said Google.
