HD simulcast pushes European channels total to 5,370

The total number of TV channels in the European Union has grown from 3,615 in 2009 to 5,370 in 2015, a 49 percent rise, according to the 2016 annual yearbook from the European Audiovisual Observatory. The data revealed that HD channels accounted for 57 percent of the net increase in the surveyed period, with sport-themed channels accounting for 11 percent of the total net rise and entertainment channels 6 percent. The markets with the highest number of established channels in 2015 were the UK, France, Germany and Italy.
